Infanticide and child sacrifice are horrific hallmarks of dying civilizations
World history is replete with examples of child sacrifice. The Ammonites offered child sacrifices to Moloch. The Inca practiced "qhapaq hucha," where children were sacrificed in the Andes. Methods of sacrifice included strangulation, and leaving children in the cold to die. Phoenicians and Carthaginians sacrificed infants to their gods. The Moche's in South America practiced human child sacrifice. The Timoto–Cuica people in Venezuela did so as well. The Aztecs and Mayans are known for their ritualistic human sacrifice, sometimes including children. Even today, in South Africa

It's almost impossible for most people to believe this because we cannot imagine wanting to hurt children. Last year, while writing a novel revising 1984, I was trying to think of what the ultimate torture would be for my Winston in Room 101. To be chewed up by rats doesn't seem all that bad, to me. Then a neighbor's teenager told me that as a 8-10 year old, she had watched children being raped and dismembered online. She said all the kids are exposed to those kinds of videos on the dark web and many boys are f'd up sexually due to such exposures, she said. I don't know if what she said is true, but for me, just hearing that was torture. So, in my Room 101 Winston has to watch children being tortured -- and it's his guilt that had done nothing to protect the children that hurt the most. We need parental controls online to protect kids from seeing such things. A whole generation might have been conditioned to see the torture of children as normal.
